Pick a launch

Where paragliding is cheap, where it is spectacular, and where it is both.

Six countries carry most of the world’s tandem flying. What a wing costs in each, what you look down on, and which launch site the money actually buys.

Turkey

Turkey sells more tandem flights than anywhere, and Oludeniz is only half of it.

Three launch sites, three completely different mornings. What each costs per head, and how much of it you spend in the air rather than in a minibus.

How you fly

Tandem is the default. The rest is what you bolt onto it.

Every flight here is flown by a licensed pilot with you strapped in front, so the real choices are the extras: a camera on a stick, a car up to the launch, an acro sequence over the bay.

The Alps

In the Alps you are paying for altitude, and it is worth every franc.

A Swiss tandem costs three times a Turkish one. What the difference buys is a lift instead of a walk, a landing field beside a lake, and a wall of snow at eye level for twenty minutes.

What it costs

What a tandem paragliding flight costs, low to high.

Every priced flight on the site in three bands. The gap between them is mostly altitude, airtime and what a pilot earns at that launch site.

Under $75

Turkish and Colombian coast flights. Fifteen to twenty-five minutes of air, transfer usually thrown in.

$75–$175

The world standard: half an hour over a lagoon, a city or a volcano, with the photos normally extra.

$175 and up

Alpine wings, hang gliding off Rio, and the high launches you need a lift ticket to reach.

Only from a wing

Three flights that exist nowhere else.

Thermals are everywhere. A mountain that drops straight into a lagoon, a trench with seventy-two waterfalls coming off its lip, and a granite ramp that fires hang gliders at a city beach are not.

Babadag

The Oludeniz Ramp

Babadag rises to just under two thousand metres straight out of the sea behind Oludeniz, and a road and a cable car run to the top. Pilots launch off cut ramps at roughly 1,700 and 1,900 metres, work the coastal air along the ridge, then spiral down onto the sand spit beside the lagoon. The mountain flies most of the year, which is why half the tandem pilots in Europe seem to spend their summer on it.

Lauterbrunnen

The Waterfall Trench

Murren sits on the west wall of the Lauterbrunnen valley, a trench with vertical rock on both sides and waterfalls coming off the lip in every direction. Launch from the terrace and you fly inside it rather than over it, with the Staubbach falling close to three hundred metres beside you. Wind funnels hard down the valley, so the morning slots are the ones that reliably go.

Pedra Bonita

The Rio Ramp

Above Sao Conrado a wooden ramp juts off Pedra Bonita, and hang gliders take a short run down it into the sea air with the pilot behind and the passenger out in front. The glide follows the forest down to Pepino beach and lands on the sand between the sunbathers. This is the one place in the world where the hang glider, not the paraglider, is the local product.

Before you book a wing

What actually stops a paragliding flight.

No licence, no training and no head for heights required. Weight and wind are the two things that send people home: most operators fly passengers somewhere between thirty and a hundred kilos, and a launch site facing the wrong wind simply does not open that day. Morning air is smoother, afternoon air is stronger, and a cancelled slot gets rebooked rather than flown badly.

Book it before you fly

Four paragliding flights that will not wait for you.

Most launch sites will take a walk-in the day before. These four run on cable-car timetables, short seasons and pilot rosters that fill weeks out.

  1. 01Paragliding Oludeniz – Fethiye, TurkeyBabadag runs on one road and one cable car, with a queue of pilots at the top. In July and August the morning slots go days ahead.
  2. 02Tandem Paragliding Flight with PilotInterlaken flies a short alpine summer out of a handful of landing fields. Weekends go first, and they go early.
  3. 03Paragliding Tour with GoPro Photos & VideosMedellin flies off a single ridge outside the city, and the usable window is a few hours wide in the middle of the day.
  4. 04Adventure Paragliding Trip with Photos and VideosPokhara flies in the clear autumn window when the Annapurnas are out. The season is short and every pilot in town is booked through it.
